Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Many patients of Dr. Loessin find it impossible to lose fat deposits and firm excess skin around their midsections. Luckily, there is a solution at our practice in Key West, Florida – an abdominoplasty, often called a “tummy tuck.”
A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure intended to give you sleeker, more defined abs. For patients who have recently given birth or had bariatric surgery, a tummy tuck can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks and remove extra skin.
During tummy tuck surgery, an incision is made from hip to hip, and the skin is separated from the abdominal muscles. The muscles are tightened, the waistline is narrowed, and the midsection is flattened. The flap of skin is then folded down and the excess skin is removed. Lastly, the flap is replaced, and the incision is stitched closed. The entire tummy tuck procedure takes between two and five hours, depending on the amount of work needed.
The most common side effects of tummy tuck surgery are bruising and swelling, which typically subside within 10 days.
Abdominoplasty – Frequently Asked Questions
For the first few days, your abdomen will probably be swollen and you will likely feel some pain and discomfort. However, these symptoms are only temporary and can be controlled by medication.
Immediately after surgery, bed rest for two to three days is recommended. While in bed, your legs should be bent at the hips in order to reduce the strain on the abdominal area. You will be provided with a firm abdominal binder to offer support to the tightened areas. Dr. Loessin will give you instructions for showering and changing your dressings. Although you may not be able to stand straight at first, you should start walking as soon as possible. Surface stitches are usually removed within 5 to 7 days, and deeper sutures with ends that protrude through the skin usually come out in 2 to 3 weeks.
Most patients gradually adapt to the tighter abdomen and can usually perform ordinary light tasks, including going back to work, within 10 to 14 days.
As long as you keep your weight relatively constant, eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and follow your surgeon’s instructions about how to resume physical activity, the long-term results from this procedure are generally excellent.
