Hides Hair Loss for The Key Islands’ patients
Having a full head of thick hair symbolizes youth and vitality. Unfortunately, there are many factors that cause hair to thin and fall out, resulting in bald patches around the head. These patches can stand out and affect the self-esteem of both men and women alike. Although a person may otherwise feel youthful and energetic, his/her hair loss may imply otherwise.
With more than 50,000 hair transplants performed throughout his 20 years experience, Dr. Scott Loessin is considered to be one of the finest hair transplants surgeons in the industry. Dr. Loessin performs microfollicular hair transplant surgery, in which tiny sections of hair-producing follicles are removed from a donor area of the scalp and transplanted into the balding areas. Dr. Loessin’s patients find the results to look natural, but not overdone.
Causes of Hair Loss
Many of our patients wonder why they suddenly experience hair loss. For most people, hair loss is a natural occurrence. However, there are several factors that can speed up hair loss or cause it to occur earlier than expected. These factors include:
- Heredity
- Disease (hypothyroidism or alopecia)
- Medication (birth control, Accutane®, medicines containing testosterone)
- Pregnancy
- Cancer Treatments / Chemotherapy
- Menopause
- Stress
Microfollicular Hair Transplant Surgery
Dr. Loessin recommends microfollicular hair transplant surgery for balding patients who still have a bit of hair. Dr. Loessin first provides an oral sedative for mild relaxation. Then, he numbs the scalp and picks out a section that produces hair follicles, which is usually in the back or sides of the scalp. The size of the donor section will depend on the size of the balding area. Dr. Loessin trims the hair from this area very close to the scalp and then surgically removes a strip. He separates the donor strip into small clusters of follicles, or individual follicles with one to four hairs in each. He then carefully places these clusters into tiny incisions on the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. Nowadays, doctors use smaller follicular units and smaller incisions in the scalp to ensure more natural-looking results.
After a Hair Transplant
Dr. Loessin’s hair transplant patients may experience some minor scabbing on their scalp after surgery, but these usually disappear within a few days. The transplanted hair will fall out, and new hair will grow in its place within a few months. The new hair can last a lifetime!
Hair Transplantation Surgery – Frequently Asked Questions
Hair transplantation, when done right, can be so natural that even your hair stylist will not know that you’ve had it done.
A typical session of between 1,500 to 3,000 grafts normally involves a full day of surgery. Surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis. Most patients will arrive in the morning and will have their procedure completed by late afternoon.
Patients are given local anesthesia in the donor and recipient areas. Most patients find that once the anesthesia is given that they feel no pain or discomfort during the surgery.
Following surgery, patients will typically feel some amount of soreness and numbness. However, most patients are pleasantly surprised by how minimal their discomfort is from the surgical procedure.
With today’s refined micro hair transplantation procedure, the incisions are very small and less invasive than past procedures. This results in more rapid healing. Most patients feel fine within a day or two, although some numbness and mild soreness can be expected for several days following surgery.
Immediately following surgery, a patient’s recipient area is typically pink with scabs forming around the micro incisions. These hundreds of tiny incisions will heal rapidly within a week to ten days.
During the first few days after the surgery, a person’s hair transplants will be noticeable if there is no previous hair to mask these temporary scabs. However, most patients feel comfortable being out in public without wearing a hat within 5 to 7 days following surgery.
Once the transplanted hair grows out, the results should look entirely natural, even under close examination.
Normally it takes between three to five months following surgery before the transplanted hair follicles begin to grow new hair. The transplanted hair initially grows in very thin, but gradually grows thicker and fuller over time. After one year, a patient’s transplanted hair will be fully mature and will continue to grow for a lifetime.
Since the hair follicles that are transplanted to the balding areas are genetically resistant to going bald, they will continue to grow for a lifetime – just as if they had been left in the bald resistant donor area.
